Apply For Your
National Insurance Number
Before You Arrive In The UK
If you are moving to the UK and wish to work or study here in the UK, you must have a NI number, also called a NINO, to do so. This is a unique reference given only to you.
All employers and universities in the UK will require you to have this so apply for your NI Number NOW, and we’ll email you an appointment for soon after you arrive in the UK
Please note, this does not automatically mean that you will have to pay National Insurance, as this will depend on your individual work or study circumstances.
Complete our simple online form with your basic details and if you need an NI number for work or study. This service is for non-UK passport holders
We will make an appointment for your Identity Interview at your nearest participating JobCentre Plus for usually within a few days of your arrival
Bring as many ‘identity documents’ (originals, not photocopies) as you can to your interview. Click below to see the full list of eligible documents
You can start work for an employer before your National Insurance number arrives, if you can prove you have the right to work in the UK.
You should tell your employer that you have applied for one, and give it to them as soon as possible after you receive it.
They will use the number to run their payroll, and make sure you are paying the correct amount of NI through your pay, if any is due
